The Best-Kept Secret for Travelers: Why You Should Stay at the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport
Airport hotels usually aren’t destinations.
They’re simply a place to sleep before an early flight or after a late arrival. But there’s one airport hotel that completely changes that perception—the TWA Hotel at New York’s JFK Airport.

What started as a convenient overnight stay before our flight quickly became one of the highlights of our vacation. Instead of rushing through the airport, we actually looked forward to arriving early. If you’re flying through JFK, this hidden gem deserves a spot on your travel itinerary.
More Than Just an Airport Hotel
The TWA Hotel isn’t your average airport hotel—it’s an experience.

Built around the iconic 1962 TWA Flight Center designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen, the hotel beautifully preserves the glamour of the Jet Age while offering every modern comfort travelers expect today. The original terminal has been transformed into a retro-inspired hotel complete with museum exhibits, vintage décor, classic split-flap departure boards, and even working rotary phones in the guest rooms.
The moment you walk through the doors, it feels like you’ve stepped back into the golden age of air travel.

Perfect Before or After Your Flight
One of the biggest advantages is the location.
The hotel is connected to JFK’s Terminal 5 via the AirTrain, making it incredibly easy to get to your flight without worrying about New York traffic or an early morning shuttle. We loved eliminating the stress of getting to the airport hours ahead of departure.
Instead of setting an alarm at 3:30 a.m. and driving to JFK half asleep, we enjoyed a relaxing evening, got a great night’s sleep, and simply walked to our terminal the next morning.

The Rooftop Pool Is Worth the Stay Alone
Our favorite feature?
Without question, the rooftop infinity pool.
Watching airplanes take off just a few hundred feet away while floating in a heated rooftop pool is something you simply won’t find at most hotels. During the winter, the pool is heated to approximately 95°F, making it just as enjoyable in colder months as it is during the summer. The observation deck offers incredible runway views that aviation lovers—and kids—will absolutely love.
Even if you’re not an aviation enthusiast, it’s mesmerizing watching aircraft from around the world come and go.

Surprisingly Great for Families with Teens
Traveling with teenagers can be tricky, but this hotel turned out to be a huge hit.
Our teens loved:
- Watching planes from the rooftop pool
- Exploring the vintage TWA exhibits
- Taking fun retro photos throughout the hotel
- Hanging out in the restored Lockheed Constellation airplane cocktail lounge (even if just to admire it)
- Browsing the unique gift shop
- Feeling like they were on a movie set
Instead of spending the evening sitting in a generic hotel room, everyone found something fun to do.

Rooms That Are Incredibly Quiet
You might expect an airport hotel to be noisy.
It isn’t.
In fact, the rooms are among the quietest we’ve ever stayed in.
Despite overlooking active runways, specially designed soundproof windows keep aircraft noise almost completely outside. We slept wonderfully—even with planes taking off all night long.

Food and Drinks
The hotel offers several dining options ranging from grab-and-go meals to full-service restaurants.
One of the most unique experiences is visiting the restored Lockheed Constellation airplane, affectionately called “Connie,” which has been transformed into a cocktail lounge. It’s one of the coolest airport bars you’ll ever visit—even if you’re just stopping by for photos.
Is It Worth the Price?
Compared to many airport hotels, the TWA Hotel is certainly a premium option.
But when you consider everything you’re getting—a unique architectural landmark, an unforgettable rooftop pool, excellent dining, museum-quality exhibits, and unbeatable convenience—it becomes much more than just a place to sleep.
It becomes part of your vacation.

Who Should Stay Here?
We would recommend the TWA Hotel for:
- Families traveling with teens
- Aviation enthusiasts
- Architecture lovers
- Couples looking for a unique overnight getaway
- Anyone with an early morning flight from JFK
- Travelers arriving late at night who want to start their trip rested
Final Thoughts
Some hotels are simply a place to spend the night.
The TWA Hotel is a destination all by itself.
Whether you’re beginning an exciting vacation or winding down after one, staying here adds an extra layer of fun to your travels. Between the stunning mid-century design, the rooftop pool overlooking the runway, the fascinating aviation history, and the unbeatable airport location, it’s one of those places you’ll find yourself recommending to everyone.
The next time you’re flying through JFK, don’t just book the cheapest airport hotel.
Treat yourself to an experience you’ll actually remember long after your flight has landed.
